Vulvodynia/Vulvar Vestibulitis

Vulvodynia and Vulvar Vestibulitus are conditions where the outside of the vagina, the vulvar area, is either irritated or in pain. The word Vulvodynia in fact translates to painful vulva.
The vulvar region includes the pad of mons pubis – the fatty tissue at the base of your abdomen, the labia, the clitoris and the vagina opening.

Symptoms of Vulvodynia

Women often describe the irritation as a combination of:

For some women the pain gets worse around their menstrual period, for others it is constant. In some cases it is merely irritating and in other cases it is so severe it can be debilitating.
The pain may be constant or sporadic and can last for months or even years. However, the pain may disappear as suddenly as it started. The vulvar tissue may look minimally inflamed or swollen, but often your vulva appears normal.
