I knew that I had a problem when I realized that I was not able to use a tampon. And I further realized that there was a problem when I went to a gynecologist and she was unable to do an exam. It was both embarrassing and frightening. What was wrong with me that I couldn’t do the same things everyone else could?
This problem was also interfering with my relationships with men because if I couldn’t use a tampon, I certainly wasn’t able to have sex. It was creating a strain that had contributed to the end of relationships. It was at that point that I spoke to my gynecologist, and she recommended I contact the women’s center. I am anxious in general and was nervous to make the initial phone call, so my mother made the initial call and spoke with one of the medical directors. She suggested that I call and speak with her myself. I did so, and she was able to answer many of my questions; Melissa was so nice and so helpful.
I went in for a consult and sat with the clinical director. Throughout
our conversation, she really got to know me personally and was very helpful.
She put a lot of effort into helping me to relax and feel comfortable
with the conversation and the potential treatment. This was a positive
experience.
The entire treatment experience went smoothly and I never felt pressured
to do anything I was uncomfortable doing. The healthcare professionals
at the women’s center took the time to really get to know my personality
and the treatments seemed to be customized to my feelings, needs and comfort
level.
There was another very important thing that I believe made the treatment successful; I was very ready to address this problem and treat it. I wanted to treat this because I felt it was important that I be able to get annual check-ups for health reasons, and I wanted to be able to be intimate within a relationship.
My treatment took about three months; I had weekly appointments. Another key component to the treatment was practicing at home on a daily basis; I was diligent about this component.
Having Bat Sheva there also provided a certain level of comfort, as she helped me with some of the psychological aspects. Melissa always assured me that if I was feeling anxious; Bat Sheva could come into the room and help me relax.
My treatment with The Medical Center for Female Sexuality has changed my life. I am able to use a tampon, have a gynecological exam, and, for the first time, be intimate with a man.
