The thing that always touches me is how significantly someone’s suffering can be relieved when they share about it. The thing most people really want is connection, and when we suffer we need to feel connected to others even more.

Several years ago I was at a conference on a technique based in Attachment Theory. The speaker showed a picture of a fetus being operated on in the womb. Midway through the surgery, the baby reached out and the surgeon grabbed its tiny hand. It was very profound. From our first few moments of life we need to feel connected and I think that need only grows over time. The statistics on people in partnerships are significant – it does not need to be a marriage or a relationship that has longevity, but those that are connected to people around them have better health, less depression and live longer.

Sometimes it very difficult to reach out to others, particularly when we are hurt or in pain. In my work at the Center I see many women who suffer with sexual dysfunction. They often start our first session by saying that I saw your ad long ago, or I found your number last year and I never called. This always makes me sad because if we had treated them sooner, we could have stopped their suffering sooner. And some issues, when untreated, get worse over time. So if you or someone you know is suffering with sexual dysfunction, advise them to reach out. You will be very glad that you did.

I realize it takes a lot of courage to seek help for any medical problem; however, it takes an extra dose of courage to seek help for problems related to sex. I know many of you reading this have already been told by others that your problem is “all in your head”, that you should “just relax”, that it’s “normal for sex to hurt” or that “sex isn’t that important after all!”

Perhaps you haven’t reached out to anyone regarding your problem; perhaps you’re feeling embarrassed or ashamed to talk to your friends or health care practitioner. Perhaps you have been dealing with a problem for such a long time that you have no idea where to start and believe it’s too late to be helped.

Well, the one thing I have learned from listening to our patients is that it’s NEVER TOO LATE to get the help you need! Whether you’ve been suffering with a problem for several months or it has been several decades, the time is NOW to get the help you need. The majority of new patients that I have seen have told me that once they found out about MCFS they still waited 2 or more years before making an appointment! When I asked them why they waited so long the responses were all along the same line: fear, shame, embarrassment. And after their first appointment each one said, “I wish I didn’t wait so long!”

As the New Year approaches, do yourself a favor and make your sexual health a priority. You will find a group of caring, empathetic, open-minded professionals here that are sincerely dedicated to improving your sexual health. And please remember, no matter what your problem is and no matter how long you’ve had it, IT’S NEVER TOO LATE!

Viagra turns 10 on March 29. (Which also happens to be my anniversary.) It has dramatically changed the landscape of sex in this country and throughout the world. It has been a great thing! When I started my practice, it was so difficult for men to come in and talk about sexual problems. It is still not so easy, but what a difference.

Ten years ago, when Viagra was approved, I was interviewed many places (as I have been, to my surprise, for the 10th “Anniversary”.) My oldest son was nine at that time. He watched one of my TV clips with excitement. My wife asked him, “Do you understand what Dad is talking about?” He nodded emphatically yes. “Are you going to tell your friends?” He nodded emphatically no.

Now, sons are aged 19,17,15, and 13. When I was on national radio, their friends and their friends’s parents texted them on their cell phones to congratulate them. Everyone wants me to come in and talk at the school.

10 years is a long time. I am grateful to Viagra for many of the changes.
